Around 65% of parents heat their baby bottles in the microwave, in spite of all the warnings against doing so. Good advice for heating baby bottles is to let them sit in a pot of boiling hot water for a few minutes until they reach room temperature to avoid hot spots - that equates to around 24 degrees. Tip - if it does not hurt when you drip it on the top of your hand it will be the perfect temperature for your baby. NB: Always use the top of your hand, not the palm, as this area is a lot more sensitive to heat/cold.
Seeing most parents do microwave their baby bottles here are some really important points to consider:
· Warm your baby bottle for only about three to five seconds per 28mls of baby formula milk
· Only use BPA free plastic bottles while heating in the microwave. Importantly, always take the nipple and cap off prior to microwaving.
· Shake your baby’s bottle briskly to disperse the heat and thus negating the chances of heat spots
· Always check the temperature of the baby formula milk by dropping a few drops on your hand before giving it to the baby to feed on
