Most teethers and dummies on the market look like they are safe, but many of them still have a major problem.
Little plastic teethers, usually a soft, plastic filled circle with water and cute patterns, are mostly made from a plastic that has potentially dangerous chemical properties. Vinyl plastics, called PVC, can have nasty additives called Phthalates. These are hormone-disrupting chemicals that are used as plastic softeners, which make teethers, well, so yummy to your baby.
When absorbed in significant doses, PVC with phthalates causes increased cancer rates and damage to the liver, kidneys and other organs. PVC can also contain lead, which is known to cause developmental delays in children. Some companies, like Nuby, have phased out the use of phthalates in most of their toys.
Some teething toys and dummies actually contain bisphenol A too. All our range of teethers and dummies are BPA free and do not contain phthalates, PVC or lead. Some of our teethers are even made from organic cotton and coloured using vegetable dyes – even the stuffing of the soft organic cotton toys is non-toxic.
We have chosen to stock only those products that will provide peace of mind to parents. We hope you will support the manufacturers of these products as they do their bit to make the world a little less toxic for the next generation. |
